Why Should You Know Your Dosha?
Do you know your dosha? In Ayurveda, a dosha is one of three body types that make up one’s constitution. Knowing your dosha is important because to remain in balance each person should honor their dosha, which may benefit from eating certain foods and drinks.
To learn more about doshas, we checked in with the folks at the beachfront Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts in Sri Lanka, which is one of the first authentic resorts to offer traditional Ayurveda to its Western visitors, including a program of Ayurvedic specialists, healthy meals, yoga, and Tai Chi. Here, they tell us more about why doshas are important—plus how to determine your own dosha.
What Are Doshas?
The three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—each govern the biological and psychological functions of the body, mind, and consciousness. They are the basic body constituents and protective barriers for the body in its normal physiological condition—when the doshas are out of balance the body is more taxed to fight off illness and disease.
The tridosha are responsible for individual preferences in food, their flavors, temperatures etc. and those govern the creation, maintenance and destruction of bodily tissues, elimination of waste products, arising of natural urges etc. They also influence psychological phenomena like fear, anger, greed, understanding, etc.
Honoring Your Dosha
When one knows what their dosha is, they can benefit by avoiding certain foods and environments. For example:
Vata: Vata is cold, light, dry, and always changing. To balance Vata, make choices that bring warmth, stability, and consistency to life. Reduce intake of raw vegetables (cooked is preferable), tomatoes, prawns, and beans. Avoid becoming chilled.
Kapha: Since Kapha is inherently cold, heavy, and dense, the key to balancing Kapha is stimulation. Avoid milk (opt for low-fat dairy products and ghee), soybeans, too many nuts, seeds, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and zucchini. Stay warm and avoid dampness.
Pitta: Pitta is hot, sharp, sour, pungent, and penetrating. To balance Pitta, make choices that are cooling, sweet, and stabilizing. Reduce intake of sour fruits such as grapefruits, apricots, berries plus sour cream, yogurt, and cheese. Balance rest and activity.
Determining Dosha
The basic constitution of each individual is determined at conception. Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth are the five basic elements that manifest in the human body as three basic principles known as Tridosha. From the Ether and Air elements, the Vata is manifested. The Fire and Water elements manifest together as Pitta. The Earth and Water elements manifest as the Kapha.
The determination of the body constitution can be a complex task. Ideally, an Ayurvedic physician would assess your body constitution (Prakruti) by medical examination and observation. The way a person walks, talks, and gestures are all be taken into account. In general, a person with Vata constitution might have a thin/wiry body frame, a Pitta person might have a moderate body frame, and a Kapha person would have a thicker body frame. Typically, a Vata person is very active in physical activities while a Kapha person could be more lethargic and a Pitta constitution person would be moderate in physical activities.
