After losing her mother to cancer, succumbing to a heroin addiction, and seeing her family scattered and her marriage destroyed, Cheryl Strayed turned to the trail for healing.
With absolutely no experience in backpacking, she made the impulsive decision to deal with her unimaginable grief with an impossible adventure. At the age of 26, Strayed strapped on a backpack and solo hiked the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail.
