Ultimate Travel Shoes: Patagonia Maha Breathe
I’ve always longed for the perfect pair of ballet flats. They are the utimate travel shoes—chic, simple, sophisticated, mobile, understated—need I say more? But, even after trying all manner of flats from designer to those made by outdoor shoe makers, I’ve never found one that stacked up to the rigors of travel. Blisters, bruises, Band-Aids, and aggravation were all mine after a day in every single pair of ballet flats I’ve ever owned.
Until I met the Patagonia Maha Breathe ($90). In my humble traveler-tested opinion, these ballet flats are simply the best travel shoes I’ve ever worn, especially for long hauls through airports and exploring destinations by foot.
This ultra-casual flat is crafted of breathable mesh and nubuck leather that truly feels like butter on the feet. I’ve worn these for weeks and put them through the walking and traveling rigors (dashing to change terminals in Phoenix and Denver) and they are flat out the best, most functional travel shoes I’ve ever owned, save perhaps for a pair of sneakers. But, the Maha delivers way more style points than a pair of tennis shoes.
The Maha Breathe’s mesh upper also delivers airy comfort—an essential for travel shoes that are heading into warmer climes or simply just getting worked. My tootsies stayed cool even when dashing through airports.
In addition, a leather-lined, anatomically curved EVA footbed supports, cushions, and—love this—molds to the contours of your foot. Patagonia has also brought its outdoor roots into this flat, with trail cushioning and shock absorption offered in the form of its Air Cushion Plus in the midsole and heel. Bonus—a 20% recycled EVA insole lends extra padding.
The Maha’s sole provided excellent traction on slick airport floors. Oh, and they slipped on and off like a dream in airport security. For my money, this travel shoe is a slam dunk if you want to couple performance and comfort with cute.

Seen bears, rattlesnakes, and a mountain lion on the trail. The prize for scariest went to the bear that stood up and took a step toward me. They’re very tall when they stand up, you know? :)
