A Podcast Interview with Cheryl Strayed on Wild

As the much-lauded film Wild—based on the book written by Cheryl Strayed—hits theaters across the country this week, we look back to a podcast interview with Strayed that WomensMovement.com ran in May, 2013 as her book was climbing the New York Times Bestseller list—where it remained for 83 weeks. To date, Wild has sold 1.6 million copies.

It also caught the eye of Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon, who purchased the rights to make Strayed’s book into a movie.

In this podcast, we learn more about Strayed—her grief, her run with heroin, her impulsive decision, and the epic backpacking journey that ultimately healed her—through a podcast interview conducted with the adventurer by our friends at The Joy Trip Project. Special thanks to editor James Edward Mills for this honest—and inspiring—live interview.

More About Wild

At the age of 26 best-selling author Cheryl Strayed strapped on a backpack and solo hiked the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail. Over the course of 94 days she traveled from Mojave, California to the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks Oregon, just outside of Portland where she lives today. Four years after losing her mother, who died of cancer, and after seeing her family scattered and her marriage destroyed, Strayed ventured  into the wilds of nature in order to find a part of herself she felt was missing.

With absolutely no experience in backpacking, she made the impulsive decision to deal with her unimaginable grief with an impossible adventure. One where she faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, record snowfalls, and the spectacular beauty—and loneliness—of the trail.

Her resulting book “Wild” (an Oprah’s Book Club Selection), released in 2012, became a national best seller. It’s called a “powerful, blazingly honest memoir.”
