My teeth followed by blood and a broken jaw after a mtb crash just two weeks ago is the scariest thing I have ever seen on the trail!!
September 22nd, 2014 at 8:29 pm
Sounds painful..and scary! Hope you’re healing well Hilary!

As far as scary things on the trail–I saw a freshly killed deer hanging from a tree- certainly a mountain lion kill- still bleeding everywhere. I think I made the right decision to get the hell out of there!!! :)

That is crazy, Erin…and very scary! Glad to hear you hightailed it outta there!

while running on a narrow trail, I ran onto a skunk. Yikes! I dared not jump over the cutie but potentially smelly beast… so, I ran back toward home.

I hate snakes, so hubby goes ahead of me on the trails!

Falling ice and rock. My climbing partner was several inches from being taken out. That was pretty scary, though maybe not as scary as being eaten??
October 13th, 2014 at 1:55 pm
That sounds seriously scary, Vanessa…that and being eaten sound equally brutal.
October 12th, 2014 at 11:32 pm
Also saw a pack of javelina’s chasing my dog, which was headed straight down the trail towards me.
October 13th, 2014 at 1:54 pm
Sounds scary! Hope you both got away…
October 13th, 2014 at 3:59 pm
I should’ve said avalanche. Definitely the scariest!
October 13th, 2014 at 8:47 pm
Agreed, Kelsey.

I’ve seen bears, rattlesnakes, and a mountain lion on the trail. Not all at the same time. :) The prize for the scariest goes to a bear that stood up and took a step toward me. They’re very tall when they stand up, you know?!
October 13th, 2014 at 8:47 pm
That is seriously scary, Bill! What did you and the bear do after he took a step towards you?
October 27th, 2014 at 8:43 am
I’ve found that most critters turn tail and bolt as soon as they hear my footsteps while hiking or trail running. I’ve even run into black bear! I’d be scared to encounter a bull moose or grizzly however…eek!
October 27th, 2014 at 8:47 am
Those are all scary things, but experiencing them makes the absolute best stories!

A black bear on one of my first outings on my mountain bike when I was 19. It was pretty awesome!
October 27th, 2014 at 10:37 am
My old ski coach yelling at me to bike faster!

I once met the most beautiful man that I for a quick second contemplated giving it all up for him, good thing he wasn’t asking….
October 28th, 2014 at 2:32 pm
WM – one step was all the bear needed to get a good look at me, decide that I wasn’t that interesting and move on into the trees. Backpacking solo, I spent the next hour clapping and singing and making other noises annoying to man and beast. :)

I’ve seen a moose hiking and riding alone in WY, way scarier than all the bears I’ve seen riding in NM. BUT I think the baby rattler my dog walked over that curled to strike between us was the most terrifying. I had to keep yelling at my dog to GO, not to COME! Very confusing. No one was bitten.

We were hiking up a steep trail in the San Juan Mountains with not much room to maneuver, when all of a sudden a pack of mountain bike riders came screaming down the hill unable to stop. We were barely able to get out of their way. We could have been killed or seriously injured. Needless to say, we do not hike that trail any more, and in fact, the San Juan National Forest is considering designating the trail for downhill mountain bike use only. Apparently, we aren’t the only hikers who nearly got creamed by downhill racers.

bears that don’t hear you coming because you’re next to a loud creek – glad he/she ran the other way once our presence was known though!
