Luscious Links: Women on Speed, Ogling Google, Hair-Boosting Yoga, and Manaslu
Women on Speed: Our favorite shots from the web this week include a post on Rock & Ice magazine’s website telling the tale of two top female rock climbers, Mayan Smith-Gobat (above) and Chantel Astorga, who broke the female speed record for the Nose on Yosemite’s El Capitan last Sunday. The duo clocked in the climb at 7 hours 26 minutes, significantly busting the previous record time of 10 hours 19 minutes. After reaching the top, Smith-Gobat, recognized as one of the world’s leading big wall free climbers, and Astorga soaked in the view and then went on to climb the Regular NW Face of Half Dome, making them the first female team to link up the two giants in the same day.
Reef Madness: An NBCNews.com piece covered a new Google Maps Street View feature, debuted this week, that pieces together thousands of eye-popping images of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to deliver 360-degree virtual dive tours. The big idea? Beyond showcasing the wonders of one of the world’s greatest coral reefs, Google aims to show the serious problems with the globe’s coral reefs today, such as dying reefs and struggling ecosystems. The Caitlin Seaview Survey, which has partnered with the search engine giant on this project, has launched a series of expeditions at coral reefs around the world to capture high-res photos for the project.
Yoga for Your Locks: Got curls? A new Brooklyn-based yoga class might just be for you. Targeting ladies with wavy tresses, “Yoga to the Curvy Curly” launched last week outside in the borough’s Fort Greene Park with 75 curly-haired yogis in attendance. According to The Brooklyn Paper, the focus of this new, ultra-specific class is on certain poses, such as a standing head-to-knee pose, that supposedly help promote healthy hair follicles. Teachers also share tips on what to do with your ’do before, during, and after yoga and the Yoga to the Curvy Curly Facebook page offers hair salon discounts. Sound like a stretch? Perhaps not in The Big Apple, where niche classes targeting everyone from toddlers and beer lovers to nudists are becoming the norm.
Manaslu: One of the worst mountaineering accidents in history struck Nepal’s Mount Manaslu last week when a behemoth avalanche let loose and ripped through Camp Three, where several dozen climbers were camped at 23,000 feet, in the early hours of the morning. Eleven people were killed or remain missing, including one female climber; scores were injured. Skier Glen Plake, who was part of an expedition attempting to ski the mountain (the world’s eighth-highest) without supplemental oxygen, miraculously survived the slide with nothing but bruises and a few missing teeth while his tent mate Greg Costa (who was in the tent with Plake when the avalanche hit) has not been found. Check out Adventure-Journal.com for an eye-opening and, warning, heart-wrenching first-hand account of the aftermath, search, and rescue from skier Greg Hill, who was based lower down the mountain at Camp Two.
