We love this week’s Time Magazine article on the fact that USA Yoga, founded by Rajashree Choudhury (wife of hot yogi Bikram), is not only holding the intense National Yoga Asana championship starting today in New York—it is also has applied to the United States Olympic committee to become officially registered. Choudhury says her organization hopes to form an international yoga federation and to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.

While both Choudhury and Bikram say yoga competitions are quite common in India, where the practice originated, bringing a competitive edge to the haven of this mind- and body-bending activity gives us pause. Says Time writer Samantha Grossman, “For the over-worked and anxiety-ridden, yoga can be a great way to relax. So just in case it becomes too relaxing, why not turn it into a competition we can stress about? While we’re at it, why not ramp up the pressure and turn it into an Olympic sport?”
