Much controversy swirled around the web this week over Mountain Mama’s new climbing harness designed for pregnant women, which hugs in all the right places and keeps straps completely off the belly and breasts, says the outdoor clothing maker for moms-to-be. Ditching the Toxic Cleaners. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization focused on environment and public health, debuted its Guide to Healthy Cleaning this week, a database where consumers can look up a myriad of household cleaning products to gauge their toxicity and learn about ingredients. To uncover what’s in common household cleaners, EWG’s staff scientists spent 14 months scouring product labels and digging through company websites and technical documents. EWG staff reviewed each ingredient against 15 U.S. and international toxicity databases and numerous scientific and medical journals. According to the EWG, just seven percent of cleaning products adequately disclosed their contents and 53 percent of cleaning products reviewed contained lung-harming ingredients. Additionally, well-known carcinogens like formaldehyde and chloroform were found in a number of cleaners. See what the Huffington Post has to say about it.
