Love, Bozeman Style

What do world-famous mountaineers do for Valentine’s Day? If you’re Conrad Anker, the prolific Bozeman-based climber who’s tackled the most challenging terrain in the world, you’re keeping it from the heart (with your feet firmly planted on the Earth). Here, this true romantic takes a few moments to chat with Women’s Movement about his own big love, how he defines romance, and what he’ll be doing today.

Women’s Movement: How did you meet your wife?

Conrad Anker: Jenni and I first met in 1991 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her husband, Alex Lowe and I were working at Black Diamond Equipment. Alex and I were solid climbing partners, sharing many expeditions together. In 1999 on a trip to Tibet an avalanche swept down the south face of Shishapangma, an 8000 m peak. Alex lost his life. In the aftermath of the tragedy Jenni and I found love. This took place in late 2000.

WM: To you, what are her best qualities?

Anker: Jenni is creative, caring, and fun to be around. She supports my profession, which is dangerous. I enjoy being around her in a casual sense and she is fine person who compliments my attributes in public. I absolutely love her artwork.

WM: How long have you been married?

Anker: Eleven years this coming April.

WM: Where were you married?

Anker: We were married in Ravelo, Italy on the 6th of April 2001. We had a private ceremony under a Mediterranean Pine. Jenni has three boys from here marriage to Alex and they were in part of the ceremony. Isaac was preoccupied with a snail in a planter, Sam was intent on flying paper airplanes off of the rock terrace and Max thought the whole event was quite classy.

WM: How do you define romantic love?

Anker: Romantic love is a hike in the backcountry with a picnic basket, a blanket, and a book of poetry, all capped by a fine sunset.

WM: Where is the strangest or most remote place you and your wife have ever spent Valentine’s Day?

Anker: We might have been in Nepal one year. Not quite sure. I would have to check my diary. For dogs (happy ones at least) every day is Christmas. When I am with my wife, every day is Valentine’s.

WM: How will you spend this Valentine’s Day 2012?

Anker: I have a small yet meaningful gift and we’ll go out to dinner. I’ll paint a card for her. Hand drawn cards are much finer than the pre-built ones from the card aisle at the grocery store.
