Links That Make Us Think: Surviving Avalanches
It was one of those brilliant days. A big group of friends. Two feet of fresh powder. And lift-accessed backcountry terrain. It all went terribly wrong, however, when pro skier Elyse Saugstad heard her skiing partner scream “Avalanche” and the ground started to move underneath her skis. As she was rocketed downhill furiously among trees and debris, Saugstad had the frame of mind to deploy her ABS airbag, a life-saving device she had been skiing with for some time. She was buried by the snow but her head remained exposed, enabling her to breath. Three other male skiers, including the marketing director for Stevens Pass ski area (where the group had been skiing before going off-piste), were not as fortunate as Saugstad—they lost their lives in the massive slide. Women’s Movement friend Megan Michelson, the freeskiing editor at ESPN.com, was also part of the group of survivors. Our thoughts go out to everyone involved.
