The Urban Beekeeper
Jana Kinsman has a bee in her bonnet. The Chicago-based illustrator and year-round cyclist, who also happens to be Miss October 2012 in the cycling-centric TyK pinup calendar, had an epiphany about keeping beehives buzzing in the urban jungle. After apprenticing at The Blessed Bee urban apiary in Eugene, Oregon, she brainstormed the master plan for Bike•a•Bee, a distributed network of beehives in the Chicago area that Kinsman will care for by pedaling from hive to hive. Her start-up, which recently reached its funding goal of $7,000 on Kickstarter (additional donations mean more beehives), will connect local urban farms and gardens with bees, which will produce luscious honey while also helping to pollinate the plants. Find out more about Kinsman and Bike•a•Bee in this clip from the Sundance Channel:Jana Kinsman and Bike•a•Bee.
