Podcast: Hilaree O’Neill
Hilaree O’Neill is amazing. Not just because she’s one of the world’s most experienced and accomplished female ski mountaineers. Not because she was named one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports by Outside magazine. And, not simply because she’s racked up accomplishments like summiting Mount Everest, skiing from the summit of Cho Oyu in Nepal, and bagging first ski descent of all five of the “Holy Peaks” of the Mongolian Altai. She’s amazing because she does all this as a wife and a mother of two young boys. While she acknowledges that balancing climbing and mothering is a true challenge, she says her Number One goal remains: “To be a good mother.”
Here, we learn more about Telluride-based O’Neill—her passions, her fears, and her challenges to be a good mom—through a podcast interview conducted recently with the adventurer by our friends at The Joy Trip Project. Special thanks to editor James Edward Mills for agreeing to let us run this insightful—and amazing—live interview. We hope you enjoy…

She is an amazing woman, truly an inspiration! Her accomplishments alone are incredible, but the fact that she has accomplished all of this on top of being a mother of young children is a testament to her dedication and deep passion for her craft.

Thanks SO much Erinn! I hope to direct some new work soon, but in the meantime I have enjoyed a bit of writing and plenty of all-around adventuring. On that note, I LOVE the site, so glad I stumbled upon it.

I think any mountain can be dangerous, but if Hilaree or any other climber goes out well prepared, then it’s less of a risk for her and we family. Thanks for spotlighting women athletes!
