How to (Truly) Help Nepal Now

Beyond the heart-wrenching stories, the gripping photos, and pure devastation wreaked on Nepal with last week’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake, our love of the outdoors somehow links us inextricably to this purely beautiful, majestic, spiritual country.

Join WomensMovement.com in donating to help the now-homeless, displaced people of Nepal, many of whom desperately need urgent medical care. The toll is tremendous and the need for assistance is overwhelming for this poor country, which relies so much on tourism and the trekking/hiking/climbing visitors for its national income.

Here are 3 on-the-ground aid organizations that will use your tax-deductible donation to help the people of Nepal right away.

Oxfam America

This aid group, a global non-profit organization working to right the wrongs of poverty, hunger, and injustice around the globe, has already been able to set up clean water and sanitation facilities in four camps in the Kathmandu Valley and it aims to reach 350,000 people with aid, focusing on water, sanitation, and shelter. Donations help them continue to provide desperately needed aid to those who need it most.

American Himalayan Foundation

This non-profit group, which has supported this region for over 30 years, has set up a special fund targeting recovery from the disaster. 100% of gifts go directly to helping rebuild and recover in the wake of this terrible disaster. Outdoor companies, such as Prana and its family of brands, are supporting this group with a $50,000 donation.

Help Sherpas Help Nepal

Kathmandu-based outdoor apparel manufacturer Sherpa Adventure Gear has created an earthquake relief fund called “Help Sherpas Help Nepal” to support aid to remote villages affected by the disaster. The fundraising appeal is on Crowdrise at https://www.crowdrise.com/helpsherpashelpnepal.

100% of the money raised will be dedicated to direct relief efforts thru Sherpa Adventure Gear’s existing network in villages, where the company underwrites the education of Sherpa children through its charitable Paldorje Education Fund.

Sherpa Adventure Gear founder and CEO Tashi Sherpa and his colleagues are acting on the ground from Kathmandu to arrange for immediate supplies of tarps, water purifiers, sanitary supplies and more to be brought in from India by road. Sherpa Adventure Gear has also appealed to its network of contacts in the greater subcontinent region to supply what they can in the way of urgently needed water, health and sanitation supplies and temporary shelter.

About the need in remote areas, Tashi says, “The village people are in desperate need of help now and later. The devastation in many areas is so complete that it will take years and years to recover and rebuild. There is much we can do together to help. We can reduce the pain of the present and help to ease the future for those who need to see hope.”
