Last week, the healthy living publishing powerhouse Rodale posted a stomach-churning guide to “14 Foods You Should Never Eat.” They tapped into food gurus and industry insiders to get their picks for the 14 most disgusting foods—not because they taste bad, but because they contain cancer-causing chemicals or (like in the case of non-organic strawberries) had been picked by farmers wearing Hazmat suits. With non-organic strawberries shown in Rodale’s report as one of the most toxic fruits to avoid in the produce aisle, the new, updated 2013 Environmental Working Group’s Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce comes out just in the nick of time. The Guide lists the “Dirty Dozen,” those non-organic fruits and veggies to avoid at all costs (due to a proliferation of pesticides used in their production). It also shares the “Clean Fifteen,” those non-organic produce items that have the least pesticide exposure and can be purchased with a relatively clear conscience.

Store-bought strawberries have gotten so big and so beautiful and so tasteless – even without the hazmat chemicals, they’re just not worth eating. Organic from a local CSA or your own backyard, though, they can still knock your socks off.

From what I understand, corn should not be on the “Clean Fifteen” list. It has been genetically modified to produce its own pesticides (right in the plant itself), and has been compared to a “chemical factory with roots”. Bedsides that, corn is nutritionally empty, offering sugar and not much else. I’d pass on corn, organic or otherwise.
