Gear to Covet: Liv/giant Avail Inspire

Released this week from Liv/giant, the women’s-specific division of Giant Bicycles, this ladies road bike is one of the most inspired pieces of gear we’ve ever seen. Born from a graphic design competition co-sponsored by Liv/giant and the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the Avail Inspire’s look was crafted by breast cancer survivor Emily Gresh.

Diagnosed with cancer just days after her 39th birthday, Gresh forged through the grueling treatment and recovery aided by a new passion she’d found for cycling. A former professional ballet dancer, Gresh turned to cycling as an outlet when she discovered the Tour de Pink, a three-day event and race that empowers cancer survivors to look forward, stay positive, and get motivated.

This video clip tells her amazing story.

Gresh explains her vision for the bike’s design, which includes the word “Inspire,” here:

“The origin of the word ‘inspire’ is actually to breathe in or to take in…I love the notion of the word being rooted in simply breathing in. Even in our most difficult and private moments, we still have that power, to breathe in. For me, the word ‘inspire’ on the bike speaks to both the very personal experiences that go with breast cancer and the great power of a visible community. It acts as a reminder of what is possible in life, and in living post-cancer, how much support we have to help us through.”

The Liv/giant Avail Inspire is $1,360 with 10% of proceeds going to YSC.
