Gear: Tecnica Cochise Women’s Ski Boot Review

Even the burliest, most downhill-oriented ski boots now sport walk modes for off-piste functionality, and the women’s Tecnica Cochise ($399.95) ski boot is one of the best such options out there. Both flex options (90 and 105) steer boards with precision and power, but also let you unlock the cuff to increase the boot’s range of motion when hiking out of bounds or across slick parking lots.

New for this fall, the 105 W women’s ski boot is a feminized version of Tecnica’s top-shelf freeride boot. The 98mm last creates a snug fit and boosts your control over the ski—a real plus on steeps, groomers, and mashed-potato snow conditions that call for assertive turns.

Returning to Tecnica’s lineup is the 90 W women’s ski boot, a softer, slightly wider (with a 100mm last) model that’s also keen to charge. It’s a better pick for skiers who are lighter, less aggressive, or seek out bumpy, cruddy runs (where flexy boots help skiers adapt to jarring terrain).

Both ski boots feature women’s-specific liners that rank among the best-fitting we’ve tried. Scaled-dowm men’s models are often too wide at the heel, where women run significantly smaller than guys. But the Cochise’s extra padding around the Achilles cups heels securely for outstanding comfort and performance, and a generous toebox allows for unfettered circulation to chronically cold extremities.

Lightweight Triax plastic makes the Tecnica Cochise women’s ski boot more hoist-able than the resort boots of yesteryear, which we appreciated when bootpacking up Glory Bowl on Teton Pass. Pulling the tab above the heel releases the cuff to provide a walkable range of motion that made sidestepping along ridges or hiking out of the woods feel less punishing. And swapping the DIN soles for tech-ready ones (sold separately) preps the Cochise for short tours.

There are plenty of lighter, more uphill-trending women’s ski boots out there for dedicated hut-trippers or rando-racers. But, for skiers who ride lifts to access the backcountry beyond resort boundaries, the Cochise is your admission ticket.
