Built for Curves: Beija-Flor Jeans

Got curves? Got muscles? Slide your thighs into a pair of Beija-Flor jeans.

Ladies’ lower halves are notoriously difficult to fit, but if sports-built muscles round out your skeleton, the quest for perfect-fitting pants becomes even more daunting. Enter Beija-Flor jeans, an athletic gal’s Holy Grail. These jeans fit curves!

The skinny-cut Audrey model ($178) I’ve been wearing has become my favorite pair of jeans of all time. The fit is awesomely flattering, and there’s no gap at the waistband (which is what usually happens when I find jeans that accommodate my wide hips). The back is cut a smidge higher than the front to avoid the crack-exposing wardrobe malfunctions we’ve all unfortunately witnessed. Even the pockets are positioned to make me look my best.

Flattering curvy bods was exactly what inspired Beija-Flor founders Kathy Moça and Emilie Whitaker, a globe-trotting mother and daughter who noticed that Brazilian jeans complemented women’s figures in ways that American brands did not. After studying the styles commonly worn there, the duo launched their own South Carolina-based company to bring Brazil’s booty-celebrating denim to the U.S.A.

Beija-Flor jeans are made in Brazil at eco-friendly facilities that emphasize sustainable manufacturing (like recycling water and using nut shells rather than fossil fuels to produce steam power). The Repreve denim used to make my Audrey jeans incorporates recycled plastic from 8 water bottles.

That smidge of synthetic content gives Beija-Flor jeans a bit of stretch, which feels wonderful after a day-long car ride or a day on the bike, board, or trail. It also makes these jeans hold their shape after a few days’ wear (when they still look trim and snappy rather than saggy and sloppy). And, Beija Flor’s three styles come in a variety of lengths and sizes (from 0 to 14), so they fit a huge range of bods. Brilliantly.
