Gear: Best Paddleboards for Women
Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is one of the fastest-growing outdoor sports today. With nearly two million participants in 2013, SUPing has experienced more-than-healthy growth of 24 percent over the past three years.
If you’re done watching and ready to get paddling, you’ll want to check out our roundup of some of the best paddleboards for women. Because making the right vessel choice will definitely up your fun factor. Factors to consider include intended use, size, weight, stability, and, of course, looks.
Here are five solid choices for best paddleboards engineered for women.
Surftech 9’6″ Universal SUP: Looking for stability? This paddleboard is incredibly stable so it’s great for SUP beginners or yogis. In fact, according to Surftech, the Universal is the Number One board for SUP Yoga. It also holds its own in the surf.
Hala Straight Up Inflatable SUP: This traditional all-around paddleboard is inflatable (read: lightweight) and, while it’s not specifically designed for women, it is engineered for smaller, lighter paddlers. It is a solid choice for touring or a lake workout.
Hala Atcha SUP: This paddleboard is Hala’s pick for SUP yoga and whitewater paddling. With a wide deck, the Hala Atcha offers supreme stability as well as maneuverability in choppy whitewater.
Surftech 12’6″ Bark Candice Appleby Race: This slick paddleboard is the fav and signature model of Candice Appleby, the most accomplished female athlete in the short history of the SUP sport. If you’re looking to go fast, this is your vessel—this is the board that Candice has been the most successful on.
Surftech 10′ Marisa Miller SUPer Model: Model Marisa Miller worked with Surftech to design a line of SUPs engineered—and styled—for women. Because SUPs can be heavy and difficult to carry, Miller focused on making a board that is super light and built for a woman’s body. The 10’0″ Marisa Miller is a great choice for surfing, general fitness, and just cruising around the lake.

I was happy to see an article about women specific stand up paddle boards, as most of the stock boards are meant for the average riders, and not as suited for women. That says, it does not appear that you have knowledge about or experience with paddling the boards you chose as “best paddle boards for women.” How many miles a week do you SUP?
If you’re brand new to the sport, the Surftech Universal SUP is a good basic board, and it has a full length pad for yoga. However is a little bit chunky. It’s 33.5″ wide, and if you research the board, while it is stable that is generally too wide for a woman to paddle any considerable distance as it will cause sever shoulder fatigue for a woman. I think it weighs over 32 lbs, for the average woman, its impossible to transport. Basically, its like paddling a closet door. The pink Marissa Miller board is the exact opposite, its 10lbs less, but you should research it more. Its a fantastic board for surf paddling, but if you don’t surf, that is a really unstable board for a newbie and is no good at all for cruising around the lake. Both are well made. The white water inflatable is an odd choice. That board will have no glide and nobody should start out on a whitewater board. It is also too wide to be a comfortable paddle for women. All three of these boards are too short to really get any glide whatsoever when you paddle. A board should be at least 11 feet long to get any glide. The Candice board is a good pi pick, except its probably not for a first time padder.
i suggest you check out:

Thanks so much for your feedback and insight, Caitlin. We selected our best SUPs for women choices after doing much research and interviewing several experts in the standup paddleboard market. We believe we pulled together a solid roster of boards for ladies for a variety of uses (not just beginner…not just yoga) but we sure do appreciate your feedback and suggestions for boards…looks like some great SUPs.

Nice post! It’s great to see more information out there for women who love to paddleboard, since we deserve to get a board that works well for us!
One women specific board I really like is the Paiwen brand, they have a lot of good options as well for the ladies.

5’5″ 145lbs Athletic 45 yrs old.
Looking for a smooth gliding, all around paddle board but I do like to go fast.
Do you know anything about the Paiwen board package?
Love the look of it and that it comes with a paddle.
Love what the website has to say.
But i am not gentle and don’t like to baby outdoor equipment. Not sure how tough this board would be.
Also been considering Hala boards for a year now.
Thank you,
Kelly
