Diamonds are nice, but leather is this girl’s best friend. Swoon-inducing softness aside, these are real running shoes and minimalist ones, at that. Are these barefoot runners? Well, not exactly. Portland-based SKORA prefers to call it a “Real Running” experience, saying its products encourage “running how nature intended-efficient, effective and with ease.” In laymen’s terms, that means that this shoe’s design encourages an energy-saving, whole-foot gait where ground contact is made with the middle of the foot as opposed to the heel.

With a zero heel-to-toe drop, thin underfoot cushioning, no heel counter, and nothing more than laces, leather, and an adjustable heel strap to provide stability, the SKORA Form will require getting used to. But, as long as you’ve been doing foot strengthening exercises and working your way down from higher heel-to-toe drops, this enhanced ground-feel, lateral-to-medial-roll-encouraging design, forefoot-strike slipper will make a fun addition to your running shoe repertoire.

On Comfort: The heel cup and toe bumper are pleasantly beefy for such a minimal package and the toe box gives some room to move. Reflective accents increase visibility, and a wraparound tongue and asymmetrical lacing work with foot shape for a comfortable, no-bunch fit.

On Distance: As for distance, after wearing them around town and for increasingly longer runs, I’ve worked my way up to an enjoyable 5K run on asphalt, concrete, and cinder over the course of three months. For me, they are best for days when I want to focus on form, not high mileage.
