Gramicci Elise Performance Top

We’re weary of spandex. Tired of Lycra®. And, even averse to the tight-fitting tops that have been prolific in the cycling and running markets for the past several years; the same ones that outdoor style soothsayers suggest will be on the way out. So, we went on a hunt. For utterly hip, completely comfortable, and totally temperature-regulating tops we could live in—for work, for bike, for hike, and beyond.

Two of our favs turned out to be the Elise Performance ($38) and Corawood Performance ($36) tops, which are part of Gramicci’s Natural Performance Technology (NPT) line. This collection employs an organic cotton and hemp fabric that, according to Gramicci, out-performs synthetic fabrics in the realms of absorption, perspiration management, quick drying, breathability, body temperature regulation, and body odor. That’s one tall order for a top, especially one made of natural, earth-friendly materials.

But we put these performance shirts through the paces—on hikes carrying a heavy pack, on runs in 90-degree weather, and on three-hour, climbing-intensive mountain bike rides. The results surprised even us. Not once did either of these tops feel sticky, stifling, wet, or uncomfortable.

Bonus: Both tops could easily transition from office to trail. The Corawood has a sleek, simple design that pairs easily with any bottom. The Elise sports sleeve ruching and a hoodie for some added style points. [Neither feature got in our way when donning a pack for hiking or cycling.] These tops are also cute enough—and odor-absorbing enough—to hit the coffee shop or the brewpub immediately after your activity. This must be performance top nirvana.
