News: Study Says Skiers Happier Than Snowboarders

Adding some fuel to the ages-old debate—skiing versus snowboarding—a new study says that while both activities deliver happiness, skiers actually find more pleasure from a day on the slopes than snowboarders.

In the study, which was published in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life, researchers from Yonsei University in the Republic of Korea conducted a survey of 279 visitors at three major ski resorts in South Korea. The sample included 126 skiers, 112 snowboarders, and 41 people who participated in both sports. While test group’s participants spent an average of four-and-a-half days at a resort while on skiing holiday, but more than 90 percent visited resorts less than five times in a season.

Focused on determining if skiing and snowboarding can improve happiness and a sense of well-being, the researchers measured the level of happiness and satisfaction of skiers and snowboarders by assessing their sense of pleasure, their level of engagement in the activity, and the sense of involvement and satisfaction they reported after their activity.

No big surprise—they found that both skiing and snowboarding elevated participants’ satisfaction and, thus, happiness. Good stuff that can have long-lasting, off-the-slopes effects such as positive impact on one’s health and well-being.

Hyun-Woo Lee, a researcher on the study, noted that even single, one-time skiing and snowboarding outings had a positive effect on participants. The study also found that skiers experienced a higher level of pleasure (and involvement) in their sport than snowboarders.
