Ever taken a digger off your bike, board, or skis that paired your breasts with unforgiving handlebars, rocks, blacktop, or hardpack?

We sure have, which is why we really dig the new KONTAQ padded sports bra ($59.99). Designed to support and protect, this highly unique sports bra boasts soft and flexible, removable shield inserts. This body armor-esque feature is a big plus for active women that take part in everything from outdoor sports to roller derby and team sports, where flying balls, elbows, and racquets can cause pain and suffering to your upper regions. What better place to protect?

Curious how it would perform under pressure—on the trail, while sweating, in hot weather—we took this padded sports bra for a test run. Despite its highly supportive nature (KONTAQ ambassadors say this bra eliminates the need to wear two sports bras for support) and shield inserts, slipping into this sports bra was only slightly more difficult that others. A bit of creative wiggling did the trick.

Once on, the support feature is quite noticeable and the bra’s pads felt, well, protective—and not restrictive. This bra moved with us. On the trail, we loved knowing the shield inserts were there if we needed it; akin to how it feels to wear body armor and simply feel more confident.

During hotter temps and sweat-inducing activities, this padded sports bra’s breathable shield inserts definitely raise the heat factor. We experienced a bit more sweat in areas covered by the front of the bra. Still, KONTAQ  works to temper this with a breathable mesh back; that bra is also crafted of am antimicrobal, moisture-wicking fabric.

While we didn’t test the crash factor with this padded sports bra, we’ll take KONTAQ’s word for it. According to the company, the inserts “provide an added layer of protection that dissipates 90% of the energy of impact during sports contact to help reduce pain and injury.” Enough said.
