Patagonia R1 Hoody—Plus Two More Must-Have Mid-Layers

Cut the chill effectively with one of these yummy, women’s-specific mid-layers, perfectly cozy for brisk fall runs, hikes, bike rides, and bouldering—or even a jaunt to the coffee shop. We’ve tested all three (during more than a month’s worth of outdoor activities) and found each to have its own special appeal. One common thread—all are crafted with Polartec’s Power Dry fabric that works nicely to wick moisture during sweat-producing activities.

Patagonia R1 Hoody: Available for the first time this year in a body-skimming, women’s-specific fit, the super-soft R1 Hoody ($149) has been a longstanding fav in Patagonia’s men’s line. It’s no wonder, as the R1 has a soft interior that’s ultra-cozy and a performance construction of recycled polyester and spandex that delivers breathability, warmth, moisture wicking, and comfort in a variety of temps. We never felt a drop of moisture in the interior, even during rigorous activities such as technical trail running. Probably, in part, because the soft interior fleece has a high-low grid construction that offers enhanced airflow and dry time. The R1 also has wrist-warming thumb loops, a balaclava-style hood (perfect for backcountry  and cross-country skiing later in the season), and a cute, body-hugging cut. The verdict: the R1 Hoody is a versatile piece you’ll live in.

Arc’Teryx Lodyn Hoody: The marriage of a wool blend and a trim cut creates a sophisticated performance piece made just for women. The Lodyn Hoody ($125) from Arc’Teryx is a mid-layer that also offered breathability and effective moisture wicking (courtesy of Polartec’s Power Dry fabric) during our tests. It also kept us nice and toasty, even on brisk, blustery morning runs. No itchy wool effect here, either—this top has a smooth interior backing that lines the wool.

Marmot Midweight Crew: Looking for something a little lighter? Marmot’s über-comfortable Midweight Crew ($54.95) is spot on for afternoon endeavors when temps are a little balmier. This mid-weight layer, fashioned of Power Dry polyester and elastane, kept us plenty dry, happy, and moving freely during our outdoor pursuits. We also loved the non-scratchy flatlock seams and tag-free neckline.
