Ocean Conservation Photo Shoot with Amy Ippoliti
Yoga ambassador, writer, and conservation advocate Amy Ippoliti spent 8 months training in a pool in Colorado doing laps, free diving, and folding into yoga poses underwater to train for her photo shoot earlier this year in Mexico with massive manta rays. She swam with the gentle giants without scuba gear, snorkel, mask, or fins.
The goal of this shoot, photographed by underwater photographers Taro Smith and Shawn Henrichs, was to raise awareness of the problems with over-fishing that is pushing many marine species to the brink of extinction. Manta rays, in particular, are threatened because they are being harvested around the globe in unsustainable numbers. They are taken for their food-collecting gill rakers, which are in high demand in Chinese markets because it is thought that they cure a wide variety of ailments.
The results of this conservation-focused photo shoot are stunning. For more information on this topic, including tips on how you can support ocean conservation and more sustainable fishing methods, check out Prana-sponsored Ippoliti’s post here.
